An amazing amount of planning goes into many weddings, but sometimes things happen, even to the best-laid plans. That is why more brides are buying wedding insurance, KMBC's Kelly Eckerman reported.Jaclyn and Caleb Johnson got married in the fall, but their path to the alter was not as smooth as they had hoped. When a bridal store went under, Jaclyn's bridesmaid dresses went down with it."I got an e-mail from my friend, who's also a bridesmaid, saying that Martin's Bridal has filed for bankruptcy and didn't I order my bridesmaids dresses from there? And I said, 'Yes, I did.' Oh no,'" Jaclyn said.
Two of Jaclyn's bridesmaids paid for their dresses with credit cards and were able to dispute the charges, but the other two paid with personal checks and Martin's Bridal had already cashed them. But all was not lost. Jaclyn bought wedding insurance. She submitted a claim and was quickly reimbursed."This is my lovely check. I submitted a claim for $350.60 and check came back for $325.60 because of the $25 deductible," Jaclyn said.Wedding consultant Linnyette Richardson Hall said that wedding insurance is a fairly new phenomenon."Most people wing it because going into marriage and getting engaged and the whole wedding thing, you never think that anything could possibly happen," Richardson Hall said. The average wedding budget in the United State is $20,000. If something goes wrong, it could really cost you."As a consumer, you need to make sure that your rights are protected and your interests are protected," Richardson Hall said.Jaclyn's policy was with WedSafe. The company offers several different policies, starting at about $150. Richardson Hall said that the insurance may ease your mind, especially if you are having a large or multiple-day event, or extreme weather makes it impossible to hold the wedding.Eckerman reported that coverage can include photography, wedding attire, rings and lost deposits, and even professional counseling. But it doesn't cover someone's change of heart or cold feet."My father thought it was a waste of time. Now, he's completely changed his tune," Jaclyn said.More Information:
