Repellents Can Keep Critters Out Of Garden
Consumer Watch Report Shows Some Brands On Market
If creatures -- from rabbits to deer -- are feasting on your garden, it's time to take action.
Keep Critters Out Of Your Garden
The Good Housekeeping Institute has some remedies to critter-proof your garden. You don't need to be a plant detective to detect if something is attacking your garden.
However, scaring away the creatures feasting on your flowers and vegetables can be tricky.
"We spoke to gardening experts to see which pest-proofing product really work, said Toni Hope, an editor at the Good Housekeeping Institute. "They said a lot of home remedies like hair and chewing gum aren't very effective."
Moles can tunnel 300 feet per night, knocking out bulbs, roots and seedlings. If you use a trap, consider trying Victor's Out O' Sight mole trap.
But if you don't want to use a trap, there are plenty of effective repellents on the market.
"There is a product called Mole Med that contains Caster Oil and, according to tests from Michigan State University, this does keep moles out of your garden," Hope said.
Rabbits have an affinity for carrots and lettuce, but truth be known, they'll go for anything in the vegetable garden.
Peter Cooney, who runs a company called Critter Control, recommends a fencing material to keep out rabbits.
"You attach that with your standard green fence stakes and you will keep your larger animals out, you will keep your rabbits out," Cooney said. "Hardware cloth is a welded wire, it lasts a long time, it's galvanized so it won't rust.
"Nothing can chew through it. And if you attach it to a framework and attach that framework to the ground, you will keep everything away from the plants underneath."
If deer are the problem, Good Housekeeping recommends hot pepper wax animal repellent spray. If the deer are chewing through your vegetables, it said to try a product called Not Tonight Deer.
