A Shawnee Mission Northwest High School teacher has been suspended without pay after being arrested in the school's parking lot Friday.

Video
KMBC's Peggy Breit reported that Albert Spungen, 52, a social studies teacher, was pulled over for a routine traffic violation in the school's parking lot.

The officer smelled marijuana and a search of the car allegedly turned up a small amount of pot and a pipe.

Breit said that any violation of the school's policy is grounds for dismissal. If convicted, the state could revoke Spungen's teaching license.

The school board will make the final decision on whether Spungen stays with the district. Spungen has been at Shawnee Mission Northwest since 1999.
