Missouri Teens Accused Of Making 'Columbine-Type' Threats

Platte City Teens Allegedly Threatened School Shooting

Two Platte City teenagers were charged Monday with threatening to carry out a school shooting to mark the anniversary of the Columbine High School attack, prosecutors said.

According to a news release, Trevor P. Fattig and Sean M. Amos, both 17, were charged with making a terroristic threat after they allegedly told classmates they planned to use guns and explosives in an April 20 assault of Platte County R-3 High School in Platte City.

Platte County Prosecutor Eric Zahnd said the charges were filed Monday afternoon, reported KMBC-TV in Kansas City.

"April 20 is the seven-year anniversary of the Columbine school shooting. In today’s world, we simply must treat threats to carry out school violence very seriously," Zahnd said in a news release.

According to court documents, the principal of Platte County R-3 High School reported to police that he had learned in late March that Fattig and Amos had threatened to conduct a "Columbine-type" incident on April 20.

The probable cause statement showed that police interviewed five witnesses who said Fattig and Amos told them they intended to bring weapons to school, including an AK-47 and a "magnum." The witnesses also reported that Fattig and Amos told them they planned to plant explosives in the school gymnasium and to shoot an assistant principal, students, and other faculty.

The two students allegedly warned a few classmates not to come to school April 20. Some of those students told school officials, who called police.

Court documents stated that one of the suspects told the witnesses they were going to carry out their plan "to mark the anniversary of Columbine."

"Simply making the threat itself is a crime, and in today's world, we have to take these seriously because of what happened in the past," Zahnd said.

Both Fattig and Amos are being held in the Platte County Jail. Bond was set at $15,000 cash.

If convicted, the teenagers could face four years in prison.
