PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. -- When most of us need to refill a prescription medication, we go to the neighborhood pharmacy.

But now it is possible to bypass the drug store and even the doctor and buy some medications online, including pain pills, Prozac and others, KMBC's Bev Chapman reported.

Nurse Chris McDonald, of Prairie Village, said she is bothered by what she saw at MyPharmaCentral.com.

"You have no appropriate medical evaluation of your condition, absolutely nothing," McDonald said.

Pharmacist Howard Stark said he has seen other online drug stores that don't require a prescription for everything from migraine medication to antidepressants.

"These drugs are serious drugs -- they have side effects," Stark said. "You don't want to mix them with alcohol, don't want to mix with other drugs and you need someone to tell you these things."

The prices can be cheap, and some sites even offer weekly specials.

"The special happens to be Prozac and BuSpar. You know, it's like we're talking about a special on creamed corn," McDonald said.

An investigator for the Drug Enforcement Administration in Kansas City said they are following online drug sales. U.S. Customs officials are seizing some of the shipments, but it's hard to shut down the companies because most are overseas, primarily in Hong Kong, where the United States has no jurisdiction.

"The attorney general's office in both states said laws are too lax and there's really nothing we can do about it," McDonald said.

"The FDA cannot police these drugs, so you don't know what you have," Stark said.

There is an effort under way to change the law to prevent prescription drug sales online.
