KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Two dozen ill children evacuated from New Orleans are adjusting to Kansas City, KMBC's Kelly Eckerman reported Friday.Children's Mercy Hospital is dealing with a lot more than medical needs for these children; post-traumatic stress is common, Eckerman said. While all of the children seem grateful to be in a safe place, they are overwhelmed.
"Very tearful, upset, confused, afraid, a lot of emotions. You can imagine for children being relocated, some without families, some in the midst of a crisis," said Carolyn McIntire of Children's Mercy Hospital."I'm also happy to be here with my momma and my brother," said 5-year-old LaJara. But not all of the children can say that. Some are in Kansas City alone."They were asking where their parents were, if their parents were alive, if we knew if their parents were dead or had been found. So just a lot of unknown," McIntire said.To help them cope, child-life specialists are using art therapy and play therapy. It's a way for the young patients and their siblings to express themselves in a more normal environment.Even when children can't verbalize their feelings, they reveal their emotions.Adults have a lot to deal with, too. Malcolm Taylor Sr. is waiting to donate a kidney to his son. He lost his home, but saved his family and his sense of humor."The ironic thing is I left Kansas because of the weather, and then go and run into a hurricane in New Orleans," Taylor said.ABC's "20/20" will feature a special report on Children's Mercy Hospital and the specialized care the staff is providing these children Friday night.
