KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Guidelines for protecting your baby from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome have changed significantly over the years. While there is no known cause for SIDS, scientists continually look for ways to decrease a baby's risk. KMBC's Kelly Eckerman reported that the latest revelation is that pacifiers, which for so long have been discouraged by many doctors, may actually be a lifesaving tool when used at bedtime."The reasons aren't clear. But it seems babies who sleep and suck while they're sleeping, don't go into the very deep stages of sleep that seem to inhibit respiration," Dr. Ken Wible said.
Eckerman said that there is also new evidence that infants should not sleep in the same bed with adults. Studies show it significantly increases the risk of SIDS. A bassinet or crib in the same room with an adult is beneficial.Reinforcing previous guidelines, scientists still say parents should put their babies to sleep on their backs without blankets or pillows in the cribs. This is now even recommended for premature infants.Eckerman reported that there is also a stronger warning against smoking while pregnant. While none of the findings has led to cause of SIDS, local doctors consider these guidelines practical steps that have been shown to reduce the risk.More Information:
