Police Investigate Similarities In Two Murders

Investigators Question Convicted Rapist In One Crime

Homicide detectives said Wednesday that they are looking into similarities in two local murders, KMBC reported.

Wayne DumondWayne DuMond, 51, a convicted, castrated and paroled Arkansas rapist living in Smithville, Mo., has been questioned by police in the death of Carol Shields last year at a Kansas City North apartment.

DuMond has not been charged with the crime.

On Wednesday, KMBC reported that detectives have not ruled out DuMond as a possible suspect in the death of 23-year-old Sara Andrasek. Her body was found in a Northland apartment near 79th Street and Northwest Roanridge Road a week ago.

Police told KMBC that there were many similarities in the killings.

In the Shield's case, KMBC's Bob Werly reported that a nationwide DNA comparison turned up a match with DuMond after tissue was found under Shields' fingernails.

A Kansas crime lab report filed in court stated that the DNA profile matching DuMond occurs in no more than one person per 3 billion.

Investigators searched the building housing the construction company DuMond works for and took latex gloves, white cloth rope and plastic wire ties, items police believe may link DuMond to the murders of both women.

Court records state that the plastic tie was similar to the device used to kill Carol Shields, a Kansas City, Kan., woman found murdered last September.

Andresek was found in her northland apartment. Not far from the murder scene, records show that DuMond was working at a construction site on Weatherby Lake. His co-workers told police that he left the site around 1 p.m. That same day, Andrasek's husband found her dead two hours later, according to police.

A rope investigators found in Edgerton, Mo., is similar to a rope found near Andrasek's body.

Werly reported that investigators collected clothing, boots, hair from boots and latex gloves at DuMond's house. Werly said that court documents also revealed that Shields died from asphyxiation and that her clothes were missing.

There are other similarities between Carol Shields murder and Sara Andrasek's. Both were killed in northland apartments. Both had been tied up. Both victims' clothing was taken, and both the women's bodies showed evidence of possible sexual assault, police said.

DuMond has not been charged with murder.

Police arrested DuMond earlier this week for violating his parole. He remains in jail, KMBC reported.
