Good Samaritan Boy Asks For No Reward

An 11-year-old boy who found hundreds of dollars in cash and gave it back does not want a reward because he feels it was the right thing to do.

Brock McCullough was at a McDonald's in Excelsior Springs playing in the restaurant's play area when he saw a bank envelope on the ground.

Inside the envelope was more than $550.

"Well, he approached me and said, 'I found a whole bunch of money.' He gets (a) $5-a-week allowance -- so I thought $5 would probably be a lot," said the boy's mother, Cheri McCullough.

The McCulloughs went to the manager of the McDonald's to see if anybody had lost any cash. The answer was no.

Fortunately -- inside the bank envelope was a receipt, including the name of the bank and a partial account number.

The McCulloughs went to the bank labeled on the envelope and were able to find the family that had misplaced the envelope.

When asked if he was tempted to keep the money, Brock McCullough answered, "Um, well, not really -- because I know how hard it is to work for money and, like, if it were me in that situation, I wouldn't want anybody to take it or something."

Brock McCullough may not have received, nor wanted, a reward, but many people across the nation were touched by the story and wrote in to express their admiration for the young boy.

E-mails ranged from, "We need more honest people like him," which was sent from an Air Force sergeant in Mississippi, to some requesting if they could personally send Brock McCullough a reward.

Due to the amount of e-mails asking for the McCulloughs' address to send the young boy a reward, KMBC contacted the McCulloughs, asking what they would like happen.

After Cheri McCullough was able to talk to her son about it, Brock McCullough decided that if anyone wants to send him money, they should send it to the Ronald McDonald House at Children's Mercy Hospital.

Brock McCullough's brother was once a patient at the hospital a long time ago, and Brock McCullough never forgot how nice everyone there was to him.
