Eddy Demands To See Candidates' E-Mails

Councilman Wants Auditor To Turn Over E-Mails

There are signs that at least one member of the City Council is working hard to prevent Mark Funkhouser from becoming mayor, KMBC's Micheal Mahoney reported.

City Councilman Chuck Eddy, who is a close ally to Mayor Kay Barnes, wants the city auditor's staff to turn over all e-mails they received from city candidates -- and he wants it done by Friday, Mahoney reported.

The demand was listed in a memo sent Wednesday afternoon that was obtained by KMBC. Mahoney reported that the memo is from Eddy, whose Finance and Audit Committee supervises the staff of the City Auditor's Office.

The memo reads: "Please copy me any and all e-mails and responses you have received from candidates to city offices. I want these by Friday, March 23."

Some leaders in City Hall have accused Funkhouser, the former city auditor and current mayoral candidate, of using contacts with his old auditing staff to his political advantage.

On Tuesday, Eddy issued a lengthy statement about the accusation.

Mahoney reported that a close look at the document shows that the last author involved in it is Regina Chandler, who is on the mayor's staff.

"Why would someone from the mayor's staff appear as the author of your statement?" Mahoney asked Eddy.

"You know Harry. He can't type," said Eddy, referring to his aide, Harry Ingels.

Steve Glorioso, an adviser to the mayor, explained it differently.

"The fact that he sent it up electronically to give the mayor a heads up and that some grammatical errors were cleaned up doesn't change anything. I presume he stands by the statement," Glorioso said.

The mayoral election is March 27.
