Shelter Cares For Dog Sickened By Tainted Food

The Pet Connection is taking care of a cairn terrier and her puppies that apparently became ill from eating dog food that was recently recalled.

KMBC's Kris Ketz reported that just a few weeks ago, Carrie was near death.

"She was just shaking, convulsing, foaming at the mouth. She could hardly breathe," said Jason Huff of the Pet Connection.

Ketz reported that three weeks ago, the dogs ate some canned food while being cared for at a foster home. When Carrie went outside, it was evident she was ill.

"When she came back in, she started to walk kind of wobbly, stumbling and started foaming at the mouth," Huff said.

Carrie was taken to a veterinarian who tried different treatments. Nothing seemed to work.

"We didn't even know about the recall yet," Huff said.

Huff said Carrie and her seven puppies all ate from the same can of Nutro Choice dog food. Nutro Choice wasn't on the list of recalled pet foods at first. Three days later it was.

One of the puppies died.

Ketz reported that of the six puppies left, five appear to be doing well. A sixth puppy still appears wobbly. But volunteers at the Pet Connection are optimistic about the puppy's health.

The Pet Connection is taking adoption applications. Volunteers said it will be another three or four weeks before they're all healthy enough to go to new homes.

Ketz reported that caring for the dogs has been expensive. Vet bills total $1,000. The Pet Connection is taking donations. For more information visit its Web site.
