KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A baseball and bagels promotion has gone bust.At last Friday's game, the Royals blasted more than 13 hits and won the game, making fans with ticket stubs eligible for a free baker's dozen at Panera Bread. It was the first and last time for the promotion -- it was cancelled this week, KMBC's Maria Antonia reported Friday.
Fan Kelly Alexander said she took her ticket stub and went to Panera five times on Thursday and once on Friday to try to get her free bagels, but Panera was out of bagels. She said other bagel-ready fans were also there."They were turned away yesterday; said there was none. They didn't know when they'd get them -- they kept giving us different times," Alexander said. And then, Alexander saw the announcement."There was a note on the door: 'Royals fans, we're sorry but the tickets expired. We're no longer giving out bagels,'" Alexander said.Panera's marketing vice president told KMBC that they were counting on 20 percent redemption for the bagel deal. They had expected about 6,400 people to show up for free bagels, but they got more than 8,500.Alexander complained and was given a box of bagels."I did apologize for my aggressive tone, but I said, 'The only way that I did get them was by being aggressive with you,'" Alexander said.A Panera representative said they gave more than 8,500 fans a dozen bagels.
