KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Hundreds of bicyclists gathered for the third annual Silent Ride Wednesday evening, held in honor of people who have died in bicycle accidents. The cyclists gathered in Brookside for the bike ride."It's important for us to think about the people we've lost," Silent Ride organizer Laurie Chipman said.
"I did have a friend who was killed in a police pursuit three years ago, and that was shocking to a bunch of us," one cyclist said.Ronald Osborn participated in honor of his brother, Robert, who was shot and killed in 2005 while riding a bicycle home from work. Two men have been charged with murder and are awaiting trial."We like supporting the bicycle groups, especially the Missouri and Kansas City groups, because they helped us in a time of need right after Robert's death," Osborn said.John Triggs, 65, was riding his bicycle near 12th Street and Grand Boulevard last June when he was hit by a concrete truck. Trigg's relatives said the truck driver didn't yield the right of way. The family is suing the concrete company and the driver. The Silent Ride is also meant to send a message to drivers to share the roads."We want motorists to be aware that we're out on the road. We all have a right to use the road. We all have to follow traffic rules," Chipman said. She said attendance for the silent ride has grown each year.
