OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Authorities said Thursday that no reward money will be handed out in the Kelsey Smith murder case.
KMBC's Maria Antonia reported that the $27,000 that was added to the TIPS reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction is being returned to the donors.
Surveillance video from June 2 showed Smith, 18, being abducted from a Target store parking lot in Overland Park. Smith's body was found on June 6 near Longview Lake in southern Jackson County, Mo.
Edwin R. Hall, 26, was charged with premeditated first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping.
Officials said the tips from 1,000 phone calls and e-mails did not meet the reward criteria because the information did not lead to Hall's arrest.
"Apparently, he saw himself in the paper, he then contacted an attorney, the attorney contacted Overland Park police," said Jim Fitzgerald with TIPS. "They learned his name, his address, went to house, saw him coming out and took him into custody."
Officials said most of the people who called in with information did so out of respect for Kelsey Smith -- not for the money.
