LEAWOOD, Kan. -- Some Leawood residents said they are not happy with a plan to build a 95-foot-tall cell phone tower disguised as a tree.Members of the Leawod planning commission approved Sprint's request to build the cell tower at a meeting Tuesday night. It would be built near the fifth tee at Leawood South Country Club and would be roughly twice as tall as real trees in the area.
"I'm not buying it. A 95-foot-tall Redwood in the middle of Leawood, Kan.? It just doesn't quite seem natural," resident Catheryn Nelson said."We have to have something in this location. It doesn't matter if we add two or 10 different locations to cover different problems. We have honed in on this analysis and this analysis clearly shows that we have a significant gap right here," said Mike Alt of Sprint Nextel. While some people don't want this in their back yard, others said the tower is needed to improve cell phone service. The issue now goes on to the City Council, which will make the final decision.
