LONE JACK, Mo. -- A teenage boy riding a bicycle was seriously injured when he was hit by a pickup truck on Tuesday.Officials said 14-year-old Brennan Maxwell was trying to cross Highway 50 at Bynum Road on his bicycle when he was hit.He was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, officials said.
Officials said the 35-year-old driver who hit Maxwell will not be charged; police said she is not at fault.Parents of the driver said she is traumatized by the incident."She was very, very upset. She was almost beside herself because of what happened," mother Pat Arne said. "She said, 'Mom, the only thing I can think of is the mother of that little boy."She said her family is relieved that the boy is recovering."A miracle happened yesterday -- that boy was thrown a long way, and my daughter hit him hard," Arne said.Residents said there have been numerous accidents along the westbound lanes of Highway 50."When is it going to be OK? How many fatalities is enough?" asked Chuck Arne, father of the SUV driver.Clara Brown was hit and killed in 2004 while walking across the same stretch of the highway."Too much speed, too much speed," husband Mark Brown said.He would like the 65-mph speed limit cut to 45 mph near Lone Jack."Why does it have to be somebody else when it can be prevented?" said Kathy Hale, who knows Maxwell.Hale wants the flashing light at the intersection changed to a traffic stoplight.State traffic figures for Highway 50 show 80 accidents along the stretch since 2002, including two fatal crashes. Experts said that's below average when compared to similar roads."We've all known people that have been killed or hurt at this intersection. It's crazy," one resident said.
