KC Schools May Hold Annexation Meeting

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City School District may be on the verge of opening up talks with the Independence district about how to transfer the seven schools involved the annexation controversy, according to a source close to the situation.Voters will decide whether the transfer takes place on Nov. 6.The Kansas City district has been fighting to keep the seven schools, but now it appears they're willing to discuss a potential transition plan.
The seven schools involved are Van Horn High, Nowlin Middle, Fairmont Elementary, Mount Washington Elementary, North Rock Creek/Korte Academy, Sugar Creek Elementary and Three Trails Elementary.Kansas City school officials said parents and the Independence district need to be prepared for the change, such as the fact that the current teachers under contract to Kansas City would no longer be in the classrooms.Last week, Independence superintendent Jim Hinson wrote a letter to Kansas City superintendent Anthony Amato asking for a meeting to make plans. Hinson had asked for a response by the end of this week.A source told KMBC's Micheal Mahoney that Hinson may get his response as soon as Thursday.
