Housing Charity To Postpone Projects

Group Says Slow Economy Affects Donations

POSTED: 2:57 pm CDT August 21, 2008
UPDATED: 7:43 pm CDT August 21, 2008

Heartland Habitat for Humanity announced this week that it will postpone two major projects because it doesn't have the funds.

The projects are for the 2008 Women Build and the 2008 Youth Build were set to start in the fall. But because not enough money has been raised to build the homes, the construction will begin in early spring 2009.

"It's difficult to tell two very deserving families with an immediate housing need that it's going to be several more months until we can help them build and purchase a home. At the same time, this creates a chance for us to reach more people to seek funding and involvement, and in doing so spread our mission even further," Heartland Habitat Executive Director Tom Lally said in a news release.

Heartland Habitat for Humanity builds homes with volunteer labor, donated funds and donated materials. The group acknowledges the slowing economy has affected donations.

To volunteer or donate money, contact Heartland Habitat at 913-342-3047.
