KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- More than 100 dogs that were found living with two women in their small Kansas City home have been kept at an animal shelter for more than a month. Now, a rescue group is racing against the clock to save the animals' lives.
The shelter has said it will euthanize the remaining dogs on Tuesday. Out of an original 160 animals, only about 30 are left at the shelter. Many of the dogs have been placed in foster homes, thanks in great part to the Basenji Club of America.
The dogs were initially found living in filthy conditions, and many of the animals were sick and malnourished, KMBC's Brenda Washington reported.
Jacque Holdaway, a BCOA member, said many people have called in to help out the animals.
"We got word last night that they had to get some of these dogs out of here by Tuesday, she said. "There's probably not any state that hasn't called, wanting to help,"
A shelter spokeswoman said the animals would have to be put down because they have run out of space for new animals that are still coming in.
Because the basenjis have spent their lives in crates without much human contact, BCOA members said socializing the animals will take work. And because of what the dogs have been through, members of the organization believe the basenjis deserve good homes.
"Once they learn to trust people, there should be no problems whatsoever," Holdaway said.
BCOA believes it will be able to find new homes for the remaining dogs before they are euthanized. The organization is also paying the $10,000 bill spent to care for the dogs.
