The woman who called 911 and reported what she thought was a fire at a business Monday night is now talking with police. A fire captain died while responding to the call, which turned out to be a false alarm.

Dena Moore (pictured, left) was driving to a nearby convenience store when she saw flashes of light and heard breaking glass. She made the call, thinking what she had seen was the start of a fire.

Fire Capt. Gary Boyert, 53, was responding to the call when his vehicle crashed on rain-slickened roads near 18th Street and Shearer Road. He died later at a hospital.

Authorities did not find a fire at Theme Party Warehouse, the business in the 2400 block of Merriam Lane where Moore saw the disturbance. On Wednesday, detectives said Moore's description fit in with an electrical short in some lights under an awning at the business, KMBC's Peggy Breit reported.

Police said Moore is not considered a suspect. Moore told KMBC that she feels terrible about what happened.

"My prayers go out to them. I know what it's like to lose a family member, and I'll be praying for them tonight," she said.

Boyert was a 29-year veteran of the Fire Department. Police said that weather was a contributing factor in the crash because of wet roads and light fog in the area at the time of the accident. Investigators said that Boyert was wearing his seat belt and had his emergency equipment activated.
