LENEXA, Kan. -- Cliff Sonnenbrot was startled out of bed early Wednesday morning by a sound no one wants to hear -- a window shattering as an intruder tried to break into his home.
But Sonnenbrot didn't take matters lying down. He grabbed an antique rifle and waited to beat some sense into the culprit.Sonnenbrot (pictured, left) said he waited for an hour in his basement until the burglar finally tried to climb through the window. But as soon as he saw the intruder, Sonnenbrot took action.
"At the moment when he put his foot inside, I clubbed him hard," Sonnenbrot said. "He jumped up, I tried to chase him through the window, tried to follow him."Sonnenbrot said he hit the intruder over the shoulders with the muzzleloader that dates back to the Revolutionary War. Then the homeowner tried to chase the burglar, who outran Sonnenbrot and hid in a nearby garage. Police said they found the suspect hiding there a short time later, given away by his footprints in the snow. The juvenile was charged with attempted theft, aggravated burglary and criminal damage to property. Police said a second suspect, 18-year-old Samuel Brooks, was the lookout man in the crime. Brooks faces the same charges as the boy, Tatschl reported.Sonnenbrot said he isn't pleased about what happened.
"I felt very said. They're just kids -- how could they do such a thing?" he asked. The 15-year-old boy is in the Johnson County Juvenile Detention Center, and Brooks is being held at the Johnson County Jail. The juvenile suffered back injuries and a cut on his head.Sonnenbrot, who cut his hand during the altercation, said the damage to his window will cost about $300 to fix.
