BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. -- A group of parents is protesting a book used in some middle school English classes. The setting of the book "The Giver" is a fictitious society with an unusual way of dealing with inadequacies in the human race, including the most negative parts of real society, KMBC's Lara Moritz reported."There is teen suicide. It describes everything in graphic detail. It's putting so many disgusting and lewd images into these children's heads," parent Cerise Ivey said.
Ivey wants to see the book taken off the eighth-grade syllabus. Moritz reported that the school district's policy states books should encourage social values and contribute to the education of students.Ivey said "The Giver" does not include values, but instead describes inhumane ways of killing people. The school district offered this statement on the issue:"The board is currently evaluating a piece of literature as a result of a parent's request. Current administrative procedure in the district provides for appropriate accommodations of materials if parents so desire."The school district said the matter is under consideration."It's depressing and I was just really, really, surprised the teacher would bring this to the kids," Ivey said.Moritz reported that the school district will give parents an answer by the end of the week.
