Two maintenance workers were found shot multiple times in the 500 block of Lee Haven Drive at about 3 p.m., officials said. The two men were found beside a truck and had been doing work for the Lee’s Summit Housing Authority, police said.

Officials said both victims were rushed to a hospital, but James L. Ellis, 54, of Harrisonville, died later. The other worker was seriously injured. His name was not released.

Neighbors told KMBC's Martin Augustine that numerous shots were fired, but no one has said they witnessed the shooting.

Police are searching for the shooters, who are suspected to be two black men who were seen running south from the scene. One of the men was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt and was described as short and heavyset. The other man was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with yellow lettering and was described as tall and thin.

Investigators said the working motive for the shooting is a random street robbery.
