LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. -- Police officers were back at the scene Wednesday where a maintenance worker was shot to death the day before, trying to generate more leads in the case.James L. Ellis, 54, of Harrisonville, and a 32-year-old co-worker were shot several times in the 500 block of Lee Haven Drive Tuesday afternoon. The men had been doing contract work. Officers found them lying in the street beside their truck. Both were rushed to hospitals, but Ellis died a short time later.Since that time, investigators have been searching for the shooters, who were vaguely described as two black men. One of the men was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt and was described as short and heavyset. The other man was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with yellow lettering and was described as tall and thin.
"What we've asked of the uniformed division is to come back out to the crime scene and try to make as many contacts as possible, within the same time range, of residents or passer-bys who would have been in the area at the same time," Lee's Summit Officer Mike Childs said."It's very frightening. I spent the night at my daughter's last night, and at night I won't feel safe," resident Gerry Gardner said.Anyone with information on the case can contact the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-TIPS.
