A Grandview police officer is recovering after he was hurt Wednesday when a tire on a tractor-trailer he pulled over exploded.

"We had received a 911 call of an 18-wheeler that had smoke and some type of small fire coming from the dual wheels of the trailer," Sgt. Randy Ellis explained as he played the dashboard video from inside the officer's car.

Officer Vernon Becker pulled over the tractor-trailer on Highway 71 near 140th Street at about 1:40 p.m.

Becker and the truck driver started checking out the problem.

"The driver saw smoke and was concerned also, so he started underneath the trailer," Ellis said.

But Becker knew that was not a good idea and warned the driver.

"Don't get too close. If that's too hot, it will blow out," Becker told the driver.

Becker is heard calling for a fire truck and then, 10 seconds later, the tire exploded.

Investigators said that the truck's brake calipers got hot, which started a small fire and caused the tire to explode.

Neither the truck driver nor the officer sustained serious injuries. Becker suffered some scrapes on his face and a temporary hearing loss.

"The truck driver was so appreciative of what Officer Becker did, he me told quote unquote, 'That officer saved my life.'" Ellis said.

Becker is expected to be back at work in a week.
