KANSAS CITY, Mo. --
A small plane crashed on takeoff at the Charles Wheeler Downtown Airport early Thursday morning.Authorities said that the Piper Cherokee Lantz clipped a fence and hit the levee next to the Missouri River. The pilot, Bob Everly, was injured, although authorities said his injuries were not life-threatening.

Everly, a retired pilot from US Airways, was the only one on board when it crashed at about 5:40 a.m.For a short time, the airport was closed to air traffic.The Federal Aviation Administration will lead the investigation into the crash.
