KC Leads Missouri In Car Thefts

City Ranks No. 34 In Nation

A new report has Kansas City leading the state in car thefts, KMBC's Chris Nagus reported Tuesday.

According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, more than 11,000 cars were stolen in 2004, ranking Kansas City 34th in the nation, and No. 1 in Missouri.

The University of Missouri-Kansas City has been the scene of at least 12 of those car thefts.

"We have stepped up patrols and we are being target specific," said Scott Shelton, UMKC's police chief.

The campus has also added new security features at the Oak Street parking ramp, including fencing, cameras and lights.

Nagus reported that the ranking shouldn't affect anyone's insurance rate.

"Being No. 34 shouldn't impact our rates directly ... Your own claim history will determine your rate," said Tara Eubanks, with State Farm Insurance.

St. Louis actually had more cars stolen than Kansas City, but the rankings are determined per capita, so the odds of theft are greater in Kansas City.
