KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City residents have come through to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. Over four nights, KMBC Channel 9's Help From the Heartland raised $761, 907.61 for the American Red Cross."When we saw the first pictures of Hurricane Katrina's devastation, we knew help would be needed for thousands of victims," said Wayne Godsey, KMBC president and general manager. "Once again, this shows how our viewers have proven to be among the most generous people in the world, with the outpouring of their support for victims of Hurricane Katrina. We are very grateful, as I’m sure the American Red Cross and the hurricane victims are."
H&R Block was generous enough to open its call center to KMBC and dozens of volunteers. KMBC anchor Lara Moritz hosted the primetime telethon, urging viewers to come to the aid of hurricane victims. Calls from KMBC viewers wanting to donate money for relief efforts came pouring in right away.
