Two men have been charged in the slaying of a longtime member of the local symphony.

KMBC's Jim Flink reported that Michael Jones and Richard Jones were charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of Steven Peters at his home at 9806 E. Westport Road. The suspects are not related.

KMBC reported that it appears the men were allegedly trying to rob the home, but Peters fought back.

"While they are kicking in the back door, the victim is lying on the floor. He opens fire -- one of the suspects is hit; as he flees, he says he heard another shot, and the victim is shot and killed," said Jackson County Prosecutor Mike Sanders.

He said there is blood evidence that places the suspects at the scene.

"There was a trail of blood out the back door, on the porch, out to the street -- where it appears the suspect got into a car."

Prosecutors said Peters had been the victim of intruders at least four times in six months.

Police also said that they are looking for a third man that they are calling a person of interest.

Investigators would like to talk to a man in a dark shirt, who was seen on a surveillance tape from Independence Regional Hospital. He showed up at the hospital with the two men. Police said that Richard Jones had been shot in the arm and Michael Jones had blood splattered on his clothing.

Michael Jones and Richard Jones are being held on $500,000 cash bond. Flink reported that the two men face other counts in addition to the second-degree murder charge. Their next court appearance is set for Oct. 13.

Peters' funeral was held Monday in Raytown.
