INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- A local man is taking his fight with City Hall to cyberspace.Tom Scott has been in a lengthy dispute with the city of Independence over an acre of land he owns near 39th Street and Little Blue Parkway."We're fighting them tooth and nail," Scott told KMBC's Martin Augustine.
Scott took his complaint to eBay and is selling one pound of dirt from the disputed land. He has also posted a sign near his land that claims the city improperly used its powers of eminent domain. The city has said Scott's land was necessary to build a road. Scott contends it was part of a deal with a developer who offered to buy his land several years ago -- an offer Scott turned down."It wasn't meant to be to take from one person and give to a private developer so he can prosper," Scott said.An eminent domain commission set the value of that one acre of Scott's property at $147,000. Scott is going to court to try to prove his land is worth more than that."We want fair market value, just like everybody else in the area gets," Scott said.KMBC's call to the Independence legal office was not returned.
