Neighbors On Alert After Power Outages

Crew Blames Aging Wires In Mission Hills

It's cold outside, and it's often cold inside some homes in Mission Hills.

KMBC's Peggy Breit reported that Mission Hills residents have had power problems for several years. Neighbors near 64th Street and Mission Road say sometimes it's rain or a gust of wind that causes a power outage, but sometimes it seems that nothing at all causes an outage.

"It's gone out four separate times within 28 to 30 hours," resident Sharon Schalekamp said.

"(In) just the past two weeks -- it's fresh in my mind -- we've been out six times," resident Ann Jandl said. "None of us had Thanksgiving last year; we were all out for four days last year for Thanksgiving."

The on-again, off-again power has thrown Cindy Tucci's new oven for a loop.

"You can't turn it off -- the levers are in the off position," Tucci said. "I'm afraid to be out of town and have this happen and come home and either things are damaged or, God forbid, it started a fire."

A utility crew from Kansas City Power & Light told neighbors the problem was in aging wires. Tuesday, crews put fiberglass spacers on the lines to keep the wires from rubbing together. KCP&L will check back to see if the problem is resolved.

But some residents aren't taking any chances. Electricians installed surge protectors at Tucci's house to prevent any further damage.

Breit reported that the protectors will calls thousands of dollars because Tucci's house is new; the cost is about $400 for an average home.
