KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A suspect in a cell phone assault case surrendered to police Wednesday afternoon, KMBC's Chris Nagus reported.

Marlon B. Gill, 23, was charged with first-degree assault. Police said he forced a cell phone down his ex-girlfriend's throat. It happened Friday morning at a Blue Springs parking lot.

When Gill surrendered to Kansas City police, he was accompanied by a woman who said she was Gill's attorney. She offered no comment on the case.

Gill is expected to be transferred to Blue Springs police Thursday. Meanwhile, officials said Gill is being held on $100,000 bond.

Melinda Abell, 24, was taken to a local hospital when she had trouble breathing. Doctors operated to remove the cell phone that was lodged in her throat. Officials said Abell's condition continues to improve.
