A boy on a bicycle was critically injured in a hit-and-run Monday evening, KMBC's Kris Ketz reported.

It happened at about 6 p.m. at Truman Road and Bennington Avenue. KMBC reported that the boy was riding his bike along a sidewalk on Truman Road when a pickup pulled out of a drive-in restaurant and hit the boy. The boy was knocked off of his bicycle and dragged under a pickup truck, which kept going.

The boy, who is 11 or 12, was dragged for about 200 feet, officials said. He was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. His name was not released.

Witnesses Crystal Winfrey was on her way home when she saw a pickup pull out of the drive-in and hit the boy.

"It knocked him off of his bicycle, and he was curled up in a little ball and the truck come out and was dragging him up the street," Winfrey said. "I got down to the corner and I was dialing 911, and I was screaming at the man to stop, that he had the kid and he was dragging him, and my daughter was just hysterical. We just could not believe we seen something like that."

Witnesses told police the boy somehow became separated from under the front of the pickup, and the driver just sped away.

"I don't know if, by the look on the guy's face, if he realized he was dragging him, but the tires went over the boy. I mean, you would not believe -- it was terrible. I've never in my life seen something like that ... I'm going to start crying," Winfrey said.

Police are looking for the driver of a dark red, 1980s Chevrolet pickup truck with a black camper shell.

Investigators also want to speak with the driver of a gold S-10 pickup who was right behind it all when it happened. Anyone with information in the case can call the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-8477.
