13-Year-Old Knocked Off His Bike; Driver Flees Scene

An east-side teenager has a lot of healing to do after being dragged almost 200 feet by a hit-and-run driver.

Juan Carlos Portillo, 13, is recovering at Children's Mercy Hospital after Monday night's accident. Portillo was riding his bicycle along Truman Road near Bennington Avenue when a pickup truck pulled out of a drive-in restaurant and hit him. Portillo was knocked off of his bicycle and dragged under the pickup, which kept going.

Portillo escaped any brain or internal injuries, but he has stitches on his head, he lost some teeth and some skin off his leg and foot. He also suffered burns all over his body and his face is swollen, making it difficult to talk.

"The skin came off, you could see his bone and his nerve," the victim's sister, Daisy Discua, told KMBC's Maria Antonia. "He was screaming, telling the guy to stop -- he kept going."

The driver fled the scene.

"I think he should've stopped. I don't know what he was thinking, knowing that there was a life, a person inside his truck," Discua said.

Portillo's mother told KMBC that she hopes the pickup driver or witnesses come forward, because of the driver would do this to her child, he could cause the same injuries to another child.

Despite Portillo's extensive injuries, he is expected to survive. Doctors said it is a miracle Portillo is alive. The seventh-grader will undergo plastic surgery Wednesday.

Police are looking for the man who was driving a red or maroon Chevrolet pickup from the mid-1980s. The pickup has an extended cab and a black camper shell.

Anyone with information in the case can call the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-TIPS.
