Police Find Mercury, Pot During Traffic Stop

UPDATED: 10:31 pm CST March 9, 2006

Police discovered mercury and marijuana during a routine traffic stop Thursday afternoon.

Officers pulled over a white Cadillac at 114th Terrace and North Oak Trafficway because the taillight was out.

Both the driver and passenger had warrants and were arrested.

Officers said when they searched the vehicle, they found marijuana and a small glass jar of mercury.

The suspects told officers they got the mercury at the dentist's office.

"There's no crime possessing the mercury, just as long as it stays in its container and it's not possessing any significant hazards," said Capt. Brian Kanoy.

A hazardous materials crew was called out as a precaution in case there was a spill.

Officials said the mercury was contained and will be properly disposed.
