Plan For Red-Light Cameras Moves Forward

KC Mayor: 'We Will Move This Forward'

In a few months, cameras could be watching motorists at Kansas City intersections, KMBC's Natalie Moultrie reported Monday.

The cameras would photograph motorists who run red lights, and a ticket would be sent in the mail to them. Drivers could be fined up to $95.

Monday, Mayor Kay Barnes told the Traffic Safety Committee that she will work with the City Council to draw up on ordinance to install red-light cameras at intersections.

"We will move this forward," Barnes said.

A task force recommended that the cameras be evenly spread throughout Kansas City, that safety will be emphasized over ticket revenue, and that the program will be reevaluated in a year to see if the cameras are making the streets any safer.

Gene Benton with the Traffic Safety Task Force said he heard a lot of public input on the cameras, and he was "blown away" by how much the public wanted the program.

The mayor's office said that the City Council could vote on the ordinance by late July.

If approved, cameras could be installed at about 50 intersections in Kansas City by the fall, Moultrie reported.
