KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Women who accused their landlord of sexual harassment should finally be awarded some money soon, KMBC's Maria Antonia reported. In May 2004, Bobby Veal was ordered to pay $1.1 million to 11 women. It was the largest judgment ever won in a Fair Housing Act case. Now, some of Veal's properties will be auctioned and the money will go to the victims.
"The fair market value of those properties is approximately $600,000. This money will go directly to the victims," U.S. Attorney Bradley Schlozman said."That's good; that's good. That's good news; actually that's very good news, very good news," victim Tishawna Owsley said.Owsley, a single mother of five, lost everything last week when an electrical fire destroyed the house she was renting. Owsley said she has no money, and she's battling leukemia."Now it seems like there's a light at the end of the tunnel," Owsley said. The houses will be auctioned off in the next month or two.Schlozman said they will continue to go after more of Veal's assets.Meanwhile, Veal is the landlord charged with receiving stolen property as part of an alleged theft ring. The case is still going through Jackson County Court.
