KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Missouri gay-rights group announced its formation on Monday to campaign against the state's ballot measure that would ban same-sex marriage.
Missouri lawmakers on Friday gave final approval to the proposed amendment to the state's constitution. The question will appear on a statewide ballot later this year. The group -- known as the Constitution Defense League -- says voters don't want to see discrimination in their constitution, and the CDL is ready to fight for Missourians' rights.
"We're looking for basic rights," campaign manager Doug Gray said. "If my partner is in the hospital, I can see him. When you talk to Missourians, they understand that."The group also said it has had some fund-raising success. On Sunday, 3,500 people raised $20,000 in one hour for CDL's cause. The gay marriage measure is SJR29.On the Net:Constitution Defense League PROMO: Personal Rights of Missourians Coalition To Protect Marriage
