KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A legislator said Jackson County officials pushed through a quick pay increase for some workers, while other county employees have been waiting several weeks for their raise.Last week, most Jackson County workers wanted and received a 3 percent raise.KMBC's Micheal Mahoney reported Tuesday that County Legislator Bob Stringfield complained that County Executive Katheryn J. Shields pushed the raises through, but didn't tell legislators what its effect would be on the budget.
"How can we as legislators vote on something when we can't refer to some of this stuff?" Stringfield said.County Finance Director Troy Thomas said 83 currently-empty jobs won't be filled, saving $1 million that will cover the raises. A county-wide hiring freeze went into effect last week.Meanwhile, workers in the county prosecutor's office are still waiting for the raise they thought they would get a month ago. Prosecutor Mike Sanders wouldn't comment if he thought the delay was part of an ongoing feud with the Shields administration.
