KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The mysterious millionaire who hands out cash at Christmas had all kinds of elves helping out this year.KMBC's Bev Chapman reported that three Secret Santas worked the streets of Kansas City this week to make the holidays a little brighter for some people."I am just so much in a state of shock here," said a woman who was given $200.
"Oh man, thank you, sir. God bless you. I've heard about you for years," said a man at a gas station."You give what you can whether you can afford it or not," said Judy Underwood.Chapman reported that Secret Santa looks for people like Underwood, who gave money to a man in a wheelchair. Santa also handed him some cash and then gave Underwood $400 for her family. In Mound City, Kevin Alexander stopped to help a woman in a burning car along the interstate this summer, but he suffered a heart attack after his good act. He is unemployed, his family is uninsured and he is $65,000 in debt. One of Santa's helpers named Alexander a John Tvedten angel -- a tribute to a fallen firefighter. Alexander was handed $5,000 from the Jackson County Santa, more from a special Johnson County, Kan., Santa and even more from a Miami County, Kan., St. Nick."I never knew this could happen to us," said Pam Duggan.Duggan lost her husband and primary bread winner after a 15-year-old fleeing police struck James Duggan's car in February. Chapman reported that all three Santas and baseball legend Buck O'Neil brought the family some holiday cheer. They did the same at the bus station, where in the crowd was a woman with two children on their way to live in a shelter in Tulsa, Okla."This is for you and your children. Merry Christmas!" Secret Santa said.At Operation Breakthrough, they handed Sister Bertha a bundle of cash to help inner-city kids."It's a $100 bill. Look at this," said a man who was given money.Chapman reported that the money will mean so much to so many."All my grandchildren need new shoes. All of them are going to get new shoes," Underwood said.In return for handing out the cash, all these generous Santas ask is that others follow their example and spread a little Christmas whenever they can."And I will keep helping somebody else. That's what it's all about," Underwood said.Secret Santa has been giving out money since 1979. It is a tribute to a man in Mississippi who helped him when he was hungry and homeless. To date, he has given away $1.3 million to strangers.Contact KC's Secret Santa
