Local Olympians Say Goodbye To Kansas City, Prepare For Athens

Two area gymnasts headed for the Olympics got a big send-off Thursday.

The Olympians leave Kansas City.
A rally was held outside the gym where Courtney McCool, 16, and Terin Humphrey, 17, trained to make their Olympic dreams a reality.

McCool, of Lee's Summit, won her spot on the 2004 U.S. Olympic team at trials held last month in California. Humphrey fought a bit longer, finally gaining her spot at a special training camp in Texas earlier this month.

The two gymnasts are part of a 13-woman team that has its eye on the gold in Athens.

The accolades went on and on Thursday as fans, friends and other gymnasts cheered McCool and Humphrey, KMBC's Bev Chapman reported.

"No matter what happens, you've already brought great pride to the great Midwest," one speaker told the pair.

The teens will head back to train in Texas before leaving for Greece. The opening ceremonies for the 2004 Olympic Games will be held Aug. 13.
